Alberta's approach to grease trap and fats, oils, and greases (FOG) management falls under the provincial Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) and associated regulations, which are administered by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. While Alberta does not operate a province-wide FOG discharge program comparable to some other provinces, municipalities across the province have adopted their own sewer-use bylaws that establish local requirements for grease trap installation, maintenance, and compliance. These bylaws are enforced by municipal public works and environmental health departments, making local jurisdiction the primary regulatory touchstone for commercial food service operators. Property owners and operators of food-service establishments are responsible for ensuring that grease traps are properly sized, installed, and maintained to prevent FOG from entering municipal sanitary sewers, which can cause blockages, infrastructure damage, and treatment plant upsets.
In Calgary, the largest city in the province, food-service establishments must follow the City of Calgary Wastewater Bylaw 14M2012: grease interceptors must be serviced at least once every four weeks, or sooner if grease and solids exceed 25% of the liquid volume, and maintenance records must be kept for two years (City of Calgary). Edmonton similarly enforces municipal requirements for grease trap maintenance and proper FOG handling through its Health and Safety Standards and Wastewater System bylaws, with inspections and compliance monitoring conducted by the city's environmental health and utilities services. Both cities maintain records of grease trap maintenance and may issue violations or fines to operators who fail to maintain compliant systems. Across Alberta's urban centers, the standard practice is for operators to contract with plumbing or environmental service providers to ensure their grease traps meet or exceed municipal specifications and are cleaned on a schedule that prevents overflow and discharge.
Grease Trap Locator features grease trap cleaning and FOG compliance operators across Alberta, covering the province's major metropolitan areas including Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Lethbridge, and Red Deer. Grease Trap Locator is a directory: we don't license, inspect or screen the companies listed, so ask any contractor for its licences and insurance before you hire. Where a company has given us its licence number, its listing shows it. Whether you operate a single-location restaurant or manage a multi-site food service chain, the directory provides direct access to local specialists who understand Alberta's municipal requirements and can recommend the right grease trap size, cleaning frequency, and disposal practices.
Major cities served include Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Lethbridge, and Red Deer. These communities range from major urban centers with hundreds of food-service establishments to smaller regional hubs where reliable grease trap service is essential for compliance and operational continuity. Each city's unique municipal codes and inspection protocols are navigated by the local contractors listed in our directory, who can advise on bylaws, inspection schedules, and maintenance best practices.
